Just found that a "new" 128Gb microSD card from a known brand is, in fact, 256Mb. No wonder I couldn't dd a 3Gb disk image to it. Well now, first time I've had this happen, although I've heard of it happening to others.

@andypiper I knew this is a thing with USB sticks. Especially ones with "too good to be true" capacity for the price, and especially from places like AliExpress. But this also happening with SD cards is new to me

@grishka@mastodon.social indeed, at the end of the day it's all flash memory and so can be swapped out for smaller capacities.
This is why I never buy these things from Amazon. Co-mingling means you will never know whether you are getting the actual item or a knockoff.
